Cultiva expands, splits, morphs, remodels, redefines, and gets in touch with it's soul

Cultiva has entered a new age of existence, a slight paradigm shift per se, in the coffee world. We have become strickly a roasting company as of yesterday!!!

Cultiva moved it’s espresso machine to the State Theatre downtown, where sidewalk espresso service will be available starting in September. Two guys known by the company named “Kinetic Brew” will be serving lattes with Cultiva’s equipment and espresso, so if you like Cultiva’s drinks, this will be a great place to pick one up!

And there is more… so much more!!

Our new ‘mothership’ location for Cultiva’s Café will be relocated to the Haymarket’s Creamery Building at 7th & P Street, next to Ivanna Cone, Lincoln’s best ice cream shop hands down. Cultiva will be a part of a new and exciting locally owned and operated book company named “Indigo Bridge Bookstore”. Cultiva will be supplying the bookstore with guidance in the realm of coffee. It will be called “Café Indigo” and will be employing all of Cultiva’s South Street baristas, including Tamara, Joseph, Dallas, Adam, and even myself on occasions. We will all be there to make sure our lattes are as good as or better than they were at the original South Street location! We are also very excited to be using a new GB5 La Marzocco EE espresso machine (PID, Shot times, etc.. basically great stuff)!!

All of these changes will be coming within the next few weeks. Cultiva on South Street has gone strickly to selling drip coffee, wholebean coffee, and toddy in a bottle (and some brownies too). We apologize for taking the lattes away from South Street, but it was a financial MUST for survival with our roasting, which is now booming!! so don’t fret.. We plan to be around for a while.

Cheers!!

Check back for updates on the openings of these new locations!!

Coffee Culture & Terrance Reis

The coffee community recently lost one of the best roasters Lincoln has ever experienced, Terrance Reis of Coffee Culture. My heart and prayers go out to all who knew him. Cultiva is offering a blend of light roasted Costa Rican and medium/dark roasted Sumatran, dedicated to all of Terrance and Di’s family, friends, and all who supported Coffee Culture’s amazing coffee over the years. A healthy portion of each sale will be given directly to Coffee Culture.

I have great respect for Terrance and have always looked up to him for creating a culture within the industry that many roasters and coffee geeks are just now terming “third wave”.

Many of our customers who come into Cultiva persistently REMIND ME that I should “check out” Coffee Culture, because he is an AMAZING ROASTER… “yes, I KNOW!!” I reply, hoping on a regular basis that my roasting skills will one day be seasoned and I too would then get the same respect as a roaster as Terrance has gained. I am humbled by his experience, and am proud to be looking up to him as a roaster, and hope to retain the same independency and integrity he kept as a roaster.

Thank you Terrance for helping wake Lincoln up!

We needed it.

Cup of Excellence Honduran Samples!!

All 26 Cup of Excellence samples from Honduras arrived this morning!! We’re excited to try these out before the online auction in July. There is one particular sample of interest to me, since it’s from my old Peace Corps site in Belen Gualcho!!!! YES!! They’re on the map of excellence!!!! I’m excited to see what the results are for this coffee. It placed 21/26 in the HONDURAN CUP OF EXCELLENCE!

Café Indigo in the Haymarket, Opening Soon!

It’s official! We have extremely exciting news for Cultiva Coffee Roasting Company. Indigo Bridge Bookstore will be partnering with Cultiva, incorporating a coffee bar within their bookstore in the Haymarket’s Creamery Building, right next to Ivanna Cone!

This will be an exciting place to check out, especially for the younger crowd and their parents! It will be child orientated, community focused, locally owned, and operated. Cultiva is proud and honored to be apart of this adventure. This will give Cultiva a great place to educate our community about the impacts of coffee on our planet and it’s communities abroad.

We are also planning to organize “trips to origin” within the next few years, and this outlet will help us do this sooner! Jon Ferguson, Owner and Roaster for Cultiva has already begun planning a trip to Rwanda in 2009 to participate as an International Juror for the Cup of Excellence Cupping Competition.

Youth Hostel for traveling or aspiring roasters & baristi

I have an extra room in my beautiful house in Lincoln , Nebraska, and I’m seeking to fill this void with someone who’d like to stay for a few weeks (or even just a day) and learn the craft of roasting coffee. I’m offering up my time to teach what I know about the craft. I am requiring payment for the room, but the training is free! You are also welcome to stay for as little as one day, or up to two weeks. I’m trying to approach this as sort of a Youth Hostel for Traveling Roasters and/or Baristi !!! so far we’ve had two visitors and it’s been a blast! Reservations are required. Check out our link to the right titled “YOUTH HOSTEL” for more information.

SCAA National Convention, May 1st - 5th

Cultiva will be attending the SCAA National Convention in Minneapolis!!

OCIA (Organic Crop Improvement Association) has invited Cultiva to their booth on the trade show floor to hand out samples of our Certified Organic Coffees!!! They are our certifier, friends, and neighbors!! We are lucky to have an international organic certifying agency right here in Lincoln, Nebraska!! To receive a sample of cultiva coffee, stop by their booth on Friday. Our samples are limited. You may be lucky enough to pick up a free t-shirt if you arrive early.

I’ll be volunteering most of the week for the USBC. I’ll be looking forward to seeing everyone!

Introducing our new roaster, Diedrich IR-12

I’m seriously in love with this roaster. We inherited the roaster from David Schromer’s Vivace on Capitol Hill in Seattle. When I began working as a barista at Zoka in the U-district, I’d frequently go to Vivace in admiration for that beautiful piece of machinery. I am quite the lucky roaster, and plan to care for it accordingly.

A gift to all Cultiva customers!!

Happy Holidays!! Cultiva purchased a Ugandan Farm Kit from Mercy Corps in the name of all who have supported Cultiva this past year!!

“A 20-year-long war forced traditional Acholi farmers in northern Uganda from their homes and away from their centuries-old farming lifestyle. They’ve been relegated to crowded camps where thousands exist on just a few acres — with no room to grow their own crops.

Ongoing peace talks have encouraged many war-affected families to leave the camps and begin returning home. Mercy Corps is helping them return — and rebuild farms — by working with communities to plant crops and conserve seeds for lean times. Your purchase of this Uganda Farm Kit provides seeds, seedlings, tools, and technical advice to two Acholi families in northern Uganda, so they can plant, grow and harvest their own food — as well as build a future where there will always be enough food to go around.”
